Technical Support Manager – The Superyacht People

Meet Nick Smith

With over 25 years at sea, Nick Smith (also known as Captain Nick) brings unmatched maritime expertise to The Superyacht People. As a seasoned Superyacht Captain, Global Charter Specialist, and former dive instructor, Nick has travelled across the Arctic, Galapagos, Mediterranean, South Pacific, Red Sea, and beyond, mastering the art of tailored yacht experiences along the way.

He’s captained some of the busiest and most prestigious charter yachts in the Mediterranean and played a key role in large-scale refits and rebuilds across the USA, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Today, Nick works closely with charter clients to plan extraordinary yacht holidays, blending deep local knowledge with global perspective. His clients benefit from insider access to off-grid anchorages, culinary coastal gems, and a cultural depth that only a seasoned world traveller can provide.

Why Yachting

For Nick, yachting has always been about the journey as much as the destination.

His love of the ocean, languages, cultures, and discovery has shaped a career that spans continents and stories.

From commanding expedition yachts to guiding guests through ancient Mediterranean villages and tropical reef systems, Nick curates itineraries rooted in authenticity.

Every charter is designed to be more than a holiday, it’s a story in the making.

He also values the human connections built along the way, lasting friendships with crew, guests, and coastal communities from around the world. These bonds continue to inform his work and add richness to every guest’s experience.

Nick Smith also recognised for his contribution to remote luxury travel and expedition yacht leadership.

Favourite Picks

Favourite Yacht

Akula (60m Amels Expedition Yacht) holds a special place in Nick’s career. Converted from a North Sea standby vessel, she was built for exploration and endurance. More than just a platform for global adventures, Akula was where Nick met his wife, a defining chapter in his journey at sea.

Favourite Location

Spain is a destination close to Nick’s heart. Its vibrant culture, relaxed pace, and coastal charm continue to inspire. From seaside towns to hidden tapas bars, Nick’s knowledge of the region turns every charter into a rich cultural experience.

Outside the Office

When not sailing or planning global charters, Nick embraces a more grounded rhythm.

Now based on the Sunshine Coast, he spends his time with his young family, exploring the outdoors, strumming his guitar, and playing golf, admittedly with more enthusiasm than skill.

Whether he’s on a remote anchorage or enjoying a quiet weekend at home, Nick brings the same balance of insight, energy, and care to everything he does.

Luxury Diving Holidays by Private Yacht

Luxury Diving Holidays by Private Yacht Exploring the underwater world by yacht Make an Enquiry Home | Superyacht News | Luxury Diving Holidays by Private Yacht Why Diving Works Better on a Yacht A diving holiday by yacht unlocks access to remote, lightly visited dive sites, without being tied to fixed routes or schedules. With the freedom to move as conditions change, diving happens when and where the water is at its best, allowing the experience to unfold naturally and without pressure. Access to remote and lightly visited dive locations Flexibility to move with conditions, not fixed schedules A considered approach that minimises disturbance to marine environments Diving supported by certified crew or dedicated dive experts onboard Access shaped by conditions, not schedules Freedom to Dive Beyond the Crowds Experiencing luxury diving holidays by private yacht removes many of the constraints associated with shore-based or liveaboard diving. Rather than returning to the same sites or working around fixed schedules, diving by yacht allows each day to be shaped by conditions, visibility, and where the water is at its best. With the ability to reposition easily, yacht charter diving unlocks access to remote and lightly visited dive locations that are often beyond the reach of mass tourism. This flexibility allows diving to happen when it makes sense, creating a more considered and rewarding experience on the water. Start Planning From certified crew to trusted dive partners Expertise Onboard and Worldwide Diving by yacht is supported by experience at every level. Depending on the vessel and itinerary, this can include crew members who are certified divers, dedicated dive professionals onboard, or specialist partners engaged locally through established networks. For guests looking to learn, there is the opportunity to become certified at various levels, either onboard or through established operators ashore, making it possible to learn to dive on a yacht in a controlled and supportive environment. This approach suits both beginners and experienced divers, including families travelling together. The result is an approach to diving that feels seamless, well-managed, and tailored to the people onboard, rather than shaped by rigid structures or external schedules. “Going off the beaten track is what yachts are made for. The ultimate luxury is reaching places where it feels like you’re the only ones there.” – Alexis Vincent, The Dive Butler Where yacht charters unlock exceptional underwater worlds Destinations For Diving What defines a diving holiday by yacht isn’t a single destination, but the contrast of experiences it brings together. Within one journey, diving can move between reef systems, offshore islands, and dramatic drop-offs, each offering something entirely different below the surface. From the rare privilege of sharing the water with humpback whales in Tahiti, to descending onto historic wrecks along the coast of Croatia. This range allows each itinerary to unfold around moments rather than locations. Diving becomes part of a wider journey, shaped by season, place, and curiosity, with every destination adding its own perspective to the experience. View All Destinations Choosing the right platform for diving The Yachts For Diving Yachts used for diving holidays are selected for their ability to operate confidently across different regions and conditions, while maintaining comfort and continuity onboard. With the right setup and experienced crew, the yacht supports diving as part of the wider journey, allowing the experience to unfold smoothly without disrupting the rhythm of the charter. From TELEOST, equipped with a hyperbaric chamber and fully certified dive crew, to 4A, an SSI certified dive school, through to expedition yachts built for Polar cruising, each platform supports a different style of diving. View All Yachts From beginners to experienced divers Who Can Go Diving? Diving by yacht suits a wide range of guests, from confident divers looking to expand where and how they dive, to those newer to the water who want to build experience in a relaxed, well-supported environment. With the right guidance in place, younger guests can also be introduced to diving in an age-appropriate and considered way, often as part of a broader family charter. Because diving is approached as part of the wider journey, participation is flexible. Some guests may dive regularly, others occasionally, and some not at all, with each day shaped around what feels right for the group rather than a fixed programme. “The places matter, but it’s sharing the underwater world for the first time that people remember.” – Cam Bray, CEO at The Superyacht People Start Planning DIVING FAQs What To Know About Diving During A Yacht Charter Diving by yacht offers access and flexibility, but it also requires planning. These FAQs explain how diving fits into a private charter. Do I need to be a certified diver to dive during charter? No. Yacht charter diving can suit a range of experience levels. While certified divers can dive independently, newcomers can build confidence through PADI Discover Scuba Diving courses, which offer an introductory dive in controlled environments, under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Does the yacht provide dive gear? It depends on the yacht and how diving is arranged. Some yachts carry tanks, compressors, and shared equipment, while others rely on local dive operators through rendezvous diving. Dive gear should never be assumed and is always confirmed during charter planning. Can I take and complete a PADI dive course while on charter? Yes, in many cases you can, but it depends on the yacht, the destination, and how the charter is set up.What’s important to understand is that not all yachts are approved or equipped to run PADI courses independently, so they often rely on training through rendezvous diving. Course structure, minimum time requirements, and local regulations all need to be respected, so this is something that should be planned in advance rather than decided mid-charter. What is rendezvous diving on a yacht charter? Rendezvous diving is when a yacht coordinates with local dive operators rather than carrying full dive equipment onboard. Generally, the dive professionals with meet guests at the boat or on the water to

The focus has moved from headline launches to meaningful innovation. More new builds are being designed for versatility, with ice-class or polar-rated capability that allows them to operate in both tropical and high-latitude regions. Builders are prioritising range, endurance and sustainability, reflecting a shift toward yachts that are made to explore diverse cruising grounds across the globe. Hybrid propulsion and next-generation fuel systems may have led the talking points, but the real shift was in mindset. Builders and owners are thinking beyond aesthetics, creating yachts that reflect individuality, family lifestyles, and a stronger connection to the destinations that inspire them. “The real innovation wasn’t just in tech – it was in mindset. Builders and owners are thinking long-term, designing yachts to reflect lifestyle, not just luxury.” – Cameron Bray, CEO at The Superyacht People Innovation Meets Experience Design That Reflects the Way We Live Innovation ran deeper than engineering this year. Heesen 55m “SOLEMATES”: Sleek, hybrid-ready and tailored for global itineraries. Admiral Yachts 72 by Giorgio Armani: A design-forward flagship blending high fashion and livability. Spaces that were once functional are now focal points. Bridges, galleys and lounges are designed with the same attention to detail as guest areas, creating a sense of openness and connection throughout. Discuss Opportunities The Conversations Defining the Year Ahead Key Trends Defining the Yachting Industry in 2025 Across every dock, the same ideas kept surfacing — how we travel, what drives innovation, and why connection matters more than ever. These were the recurring themes shaping conversations with captains, brokers, and builders alike: Experience-Led Design Yachts are being created around how people actually use them. Convertible spaces, family-friendly layouts, and flexible deck areas are replacing rigid, formal design. Practical Sustainability Talk around sustainability has matured. Hybrid propulsion, smarter energy systems, and reduced-waste operations are no longer ambitions — they’re becoming the standard. Exploration in Focus Explorer yachts dominated the narrative. Range, storage, and capability are top priorities, alongside a growing interest in destinations outside the Mediterranean, especially the South Pacific. Crew Continuity The best charter experiences still come down to people. Owners and clients are placing more value on long-term crew relationships that define the onboard atmosphere. Design with Depth Interiors are becoming more personal and tactile. Natural materials, softer palettes, and functional flow are redefining what modern luxury feels like. Spaces with Purpose Areas once reserved for crew are being reimagined as shared spaces. Bridges, galleys, and work zones are now designed with the same attention to detail as guest areas, reflecting a more open, experience-driven approach to life on board. The Human Element Why People Still Power This Industry For all the innovation and spectacle, Monaco always comes back to the people. The captains who share their hidden anchorages, the clients who dream bigger every year, and the colleagues you only see once in person but speak to all season long. It’s those conversations that happen between meetings, on tenders or over a quick coffee that shape what comes next. They’re the reminder that while yachts are the platform, people are the story. “Technology may push the boundaries, but trust and relationships still steer the journey.” – Halle Scott, The Superyacht Industry Professional Discuss Opportunities Stay Connected See The Full Story On Our Socials This is just a snapshot of Monaco.
