There are few places that capture the energy of the Caribbean superyacht season quite like St Barths. Gustavia fills with yachts over the winter months, while on shore, restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs give the island an atmosphere and rhythm that feels distinctly different from the Caribbean’s quieter cruising grounds. Over Christmas and the New Year in particular, energy reaches another level as yachts gather around the island for one of the season’s biggest celebrations.
Not that much of a party person? That’s fine too; chartering a yacht means you can step away from the hustle and bustle of the port and escape to the peace and quiet of your own private yacht.
You can spend the morning anchored off Colombier, swimming from the yacht and making use of the water toys before heading around the coast to St Jean. Come evening, arrive in Gustavia by tender for dinner before returning to your home for the week while you enjoy a night cap under the stars, far away from the crowds.
The ability to move between the island’s social side and its quieter bays is what makes St Barths particularly well suited to a yacht charter. St Barths can also form part of a wider Leeward Islands itinerary, with St Martin providing a convenient embarkation point and Anguilla adding beautiful beaches and a more laid-back pace.

For guests looking to pick up and go a bit more during their charter without cruising for long, the Virgin Islands are pretty hard to beat. Across the British and US Virgin Islands, dozens of islands, cays and anchorages sit within a relatively compact cruising area. That means more of your day can be spent swimming, exploring, snorkelling or exploring on shore and less time getting from one anchorage to another.
The British Virgin Islands offer some of the region’s most recognisable charter experiences. Swim among the granite boulders of The Baths on Virgin Gorda, head to the beach to explore Jost Van Dyke barefoot, snorkel around Norman Island or cruise north to the quieter shores of Anegada.
The US Virgin Islands offers another side of the coin. St John features beautiful protected bays, beaches and extensive national park landscapes, while St Thomas provides a convenient gateway to the wider cruising grounds of the US Virgin Islands.
The combination of chartering across both islands offers a great balance of variety, easy cruising and short stop overs which are favoured by families, first-time charterers and those looking to make the most of their time at sea.

In the Exumas, the water isn’t simply the backdrop to your charter, it becomes a huge part of the experience. Stretching across a chain of over 700 islands and cays surrounded by impossibly clear, shallow waters, this is a destination made for days spent outside. Launch the paddleboards or Seabobs from the swim platform, take the tender into a hidden creek, snorkel over a reef or wander up onto the swathes of sandbars that might be gone by the next tide.
There are the well-known stops of course. Staniel Cay and the swimming pages at Big Major Cay are usually the top destinations for yachts here. Thunderball Grotto offers one of the area’s most memorable snorkelling experiences (and yes, it’s eponymously named after the James Bond film). Antigua and Barbuda offer two very different sides of the Caribbean within one yacht charter. Antigua has long been at the heart of the region’s sailing scene. English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour become important hubs for the winter yacht fleet, while historic Nelson’s Dockyard, numerous onshore restaurants and endless choice of beaches provide plenty of reasons to explore your surroundings.
Cruise north to Barbuda one day and you’ll notice the atmosphere change. Development gives way to long stretches of pink sand, clear shallow water and a sense of space that can feel worlds away from Antigua, despite the relatively short distance between them.
That contrast is what makes the pairing work so well by yacht. Instead of choosing between one or the other, you can spend part of your charter immersed in Antigua’s sailing history and lively harbours, then move onto a quiet anchorage off Barbuda where the pace completely slows down.
For those who love to unfurl the sails, Antigua is an obvious choice, but the destination works equally well for motor yacht charters looking for a mix of beaches, history, restaurants and time on the water.

St Vincent and the Grenadines offer a string of islands that feel almost purpose-built for travelling by yacht. Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays can all become part of the journey, with each spot to drop anchor bringing you something different and unique.
You can spend a morning lazily exploring Bequia before moving onto Mustique. Swim and snorkel among turtles in the Tobago Cays. Take the tender to shore to a tiny beach and explore all by yourselves, or simply stay on deck as the sun disappears behind an island with little else around you.

The Virgin Islands are particularly well suited to first-time charter guests thanks to relatively short cruising distances, a huge choice of islands and anchorages and plenty to experience both on land and on the water.
The cost will vary depending on the yacht, destination and time of year. In addition to the listed base charter fee, guests should budget for additional expenses including the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), typically around 30-40% of the charter fee, applicable local taxes and crew gratuity, which is generally around 10-15%.
The Virgin Islands and Bahamas are both excellent choices for families. The Virgin Islands offer easy island hopping and relatively short passages, while the Exumas are ideal for families who want to spend most of their charter swimming, exploring and enjoying water toys.
St Barths is one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated festive-season destinations, particularly around New Year’s Eve. The Virgin Islands, Antigua and the Bahamas are also popular choices for yacht charters booked around the holiday season.
For the busiest weeks such as those over the festive period, booking as early as possible gives you the greatest choice of yachts. For January through March, there may be greater flexibility, although sought-after yachts and specific cabin configurations can still book well ahead so we recommend at least six months in advance, or up to 12 months if you already know you plan to travel to the Caribbean then.
